At least 12 prisoners died this Sunday in clashes in El Turi, an Ecuadorian prison located in the southern province of Azuayas confirmed by the Minister of the Government, Patricio Carrillo.

“So far 12 victims have been identified outside and inside, the work is still ongoing and an assessment is underway,” he said at a news conference.

The official attributed the clashes in the prison center to “There is an organization that wants to have absolute power within the center and there are some cells that have rebelled against them”.

The new revolt that took place in the early hours of this Sunday has left an unknown number of wounded and forced the mobilization of 800 policemen and soldiers to regain control of the prison.

The violent events started around 01:30 local time (06:30 GMT).

Director of the National Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Liberty and Adolescent Offenders of Ecuador (SNAI), Pablo Ramírez, commented during the joint press conference that 90 prisoners were evacuated, 10 of them with injuries treated by Ministry of Health staff. .

He added that five ambulances were placed outside the detention center to provide necessary treatment.

For her part, the secretary for human rights, Bernarda Ordóñez, stressed that they have moved specialized teams to the area to assist the relatives of the detainees.

Likewise, as soon as the bodies are evacuated, they will adopt the corresponding protocols to deliver the bodies to their families.

This uprising is part of the prison crisis Ecuador has been experiencing since last year, when 316 prisoners died in violent clashes between rival gangs vying for control of prisons.

In the same El Turi prison, on the outskirts of Cuenca, the capital of the province of Azuay, 33 prisoners were massacred on 23 February 2021, most of them beheaded and dismembered in an attack between rival gangs coordinated simultaneously in different prisons that left 78 dead. all over the country.

In Ecuador’s 65 prisons, with a capacity of about 30,000 people, there are about 39,000 inmates (30% overpopulation). Of the total, 15,000 are without conviction.
