The Prolonged COVID or post-COVID-19 syndrome is an emergent and complex health problem that is affecting humanity and will have an impact in the future, even after the coronavirus pandemic.

The most prevalent are fatigue (approximately 58%), lack of air (24%), joint pain (19%), chest pain (16%)2,3, head pain (44%), palpitations (11%), physical limitations, depression (12%) and insomnia (11%).

The new study was carried out by researchers at the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine at the Bar-Ilan University in Israel. They demonstrated that the vaccination with at least two doses of the vaccines developed by the companies Pfizer and BioNTech drastically reduces the majority of long-term symptoms that individuals declare months after contracting the infection with the coronavirus.

In the investigation, eight of the ten most common symptoms were registered between 50 and 80% less among individuals who received at least two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine en comprásiona con los que no gívenor ninguna dosis.

The study was published in the magazine npj Vaccinesdel grupo editorial que publica Nature. It was directed by professor Michael Edelstein, of the University of Bar-Ilan, in collaboration with the teams of infectious diseases and informatics of three of the hospitals affiliated to the Faculty in the north of Israel: Centro Médico Baruch Padeh, Centro Médico Ziv y Galilea Medical Center. Paul Otiku, doctoral student of Facultad Azrieli de Bar-Ilan, performed the major part of the statistical analysis.

Almost 3,500 adults in Israel participated in the study, que fue realizado between July and November 2021. These people completed a survey available in four commonly spoken local languages -Hebrew, Arabic, Russian and English- with a variety of questions about the previous infection of COVID-19, the state of vaccination and cualquier síntoma que estuvieren experimentando.

More than half of the participants (2,447) declared no previous infection with the coronavirus, while 951 were infected. Among those who had the infection, 637 (67%) received at least two doses of vaccine. Of the 2,447 individuals who did not declare any previous infection, 21 (0.9%) received one dose, 1,195 (48.8%) received two doses, 744 (30.4%) received three doses and the rest were not vaccinated ( 19.9%).

Between the population of the actual study, the most commonly reported symptoms -fatigue, dolor de cabeza, debilidad de las extremitas y persistent muscular dolor- se redujeron en un 62%, 50%, 62% y 66%, respectively.

The study, which received funding from the Harvey Goodstein Foundation, contributed to the lack of information in the world about the impact of vaccination on the prolonged COVID. “We don’t understand everything that is happening in the months and years following COVID-19 in terms of health and physical and mental health,” said Professor Edelstein.

Every time it is more clear that the vaccines protect not only against the disease but, as they suggest the results of this study, against the long-term effects of the COVID-19, que a veces cambian la vida”, resaltó el experto.

His study was the first of a current project put into action to monitor a large cohort of individuals from all sectors of Israel with the aim of understanding the impact of vaccines on the quality of life in the long term, the different variants del coronavirus y los symptoms del COVID Prolongado.

They also recently found out the results of another study in Italy.

They included a total of 739 individuals with an average age of 42.8 years (25.4% men), of which 31% developed Prolonged COVID and 16% of these individuals had received three doses of the vaccine.
